No mo 'roids-Mom update

Mom officially finished chemo yesterday...yipee...just as importantly she is done with the steroids that come with her chemo hence the title....those steriods were one of her biggest enemies these last 6 months...causing late night cleaning sessions, and one too many sleepless nights....we couldn't be more excited to say no mo 'roids and no mo chemo....I think watching your loved one go through this has to be one of the hardest things...my mom might be the most incredible lady...she never complains....always says "well so and so has it worse"....always staying so positive...she has had more energy than I have sometimes...she impresses and blesses me more everyday....she will have a repeat CT scan in the next 2 weeks and we are prayful and hopeful she will never see the inside of a chemo room again....

This about sums up her last 6 months:
Surgery-1
Labs-22ish
CT scan-2
Neulasta-6
Avastin: 12
Chemo rounds-18
Chemo start: April 2, 2013
Chemo end: Sept 3, 2013

This is from her big "No mo chemo" party last time...we are going to opt for a small, family celebration this time around and will be singing "No mo chemo" and maybe even chanting "Cancer sucks"

For those who are fighting cancer or who has a loved one that is....please know you are constantly on our hearts and in our prayers...Faith and family, like my mom's oncologist says...are essential to the fight...

Mom on steroids

As most of you know mom started chemo yesterday, 1 down 17 more to go....it was a pretty emotional day...she said the first one is the most emotional, I don't think preparing yourself to be back in the swing of chemo, lab draws, needle pokes, etc. would ever be easy. We had an incredible family filled weekend before she started which was very nice, pampered her with a pedicure and all. I met mom and dad over at Dr. Munoz's office as usual yesterday and when she went back the chemo room was filled with laughter. One of the sweet ladies in the chemo room is hilarious...she is on her 3rd reoccurence of ovarian cancer and some how manages to always have a smile on her face when we see her. My mom actually said to her, "I love that you stay so positive," to which she responded

"I can wallow in self pity or choose to be happy and I choose to smile. I'm either smilin or cussin and I'm fluent in multiple languages of cussin."

When she is in the chemo room there is lots of laughter, when I was there one time she was wanting to hand out margaritas for everyone:) So needless to say mom  at least had someone to bring some smiles on such a tough day. Like I talked about here she will be getting chemo for the next 6 months, as part of her premedication she gets a hefty dose of steroids to boost her system and prevent reactions to the chemo and the video below is the aftermath of mom on steroids. (I haven't stopped smiling about it since our dad sent it to us last night at 10 pm, yep you read that right 10 pm)

This is actually the 2nd video he sent us, the first one she was dusting the blinds...she discovered he was videoing at the beginning of this video to send to us obv

This cleaning frenzy in sued until she crashed out at about 4 am and then slept until Chaille woke her up at 1:30 today. We are praying this does not happen again tonight or ever but at least her house is spotless...she even spot cleaned carpet and would have mowed for my dad if it hadn't been dark.

Here is my mom's verse that she has been leaning on:

For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand,

Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.'

Isaiah 41:13

Thank you all who have prayed, checked in with us, and encouraged her already. Specific prayers over the next 6 months:

-That the chemo kills all the cancer cells but leaves her healthy ones alone
-After 6 months she will never have to see a chemo room again
-That she will be able to sleep and not have anymore side effects from the steroids
-That the pain in her arms after chemo stops
-That the nausea subsides and she has no other effects from the chemo
-That her body and all cells are protected from any ill side effects of chemo

Thank you, thank you for the prayers!

Boo Fo Chemo

"Everyones got a story to tell, everyone has a wound that needs to be healed" Plumb.....I have been really listening to this song below a lot lately and knowing and trusting that God is in control. During this past few months of waiting I have clung to knowing that thankfully He is in control. I absolutely loved this blog post on waiting.  I loved Beth Moore's quote that "Never in our wait is God inactive." I truly believe that despite the pain and agony of waiting for our appointment today that God was completely in control working on each of us: my mom, my dad, my sisters, me, and Dr. Munoz. When Dr. Munoz came in today to tell us that the research from California came back that mom's Clear Cell carcinoma cancer is responsive to 2 chemos my heart sunk. I did and still have such mixed emotions while I NEVER, EVER wanted to see my mom have to go through the pain and discomfort of chemo again and I had prayed and begged God for no more chemo, I also felt the need to praise Him that there was a chemo that would treat her cancer. The week after we found out my mom's cancer was back during one of my very tearful quiet times I felt the Lord tell me that He wasn't finished with her in the chemo room. (You see my mom is a huge blessing to these women, preaching and encouraging...what she does best:) Though I prayed and hoped I had heard Him wrong I know that He is faithful and truly must not be done with her in that chemo room. Based on the research from mom's tumor in California she will be starting chemo again at the end of March or early April. We are praying her and my dad get to take a quick trip before it begins. She will be getting 6 months of chemo she will get 3 weeks of chemo then a week off each month. She will be receiving Taxotere (similar to Taxol she received here) and Cisplatin (similar to Carboplatin she also received here) and Avastin (like here) that helps by basically assisting the chemo to work even better. Please be praying for our mom right now pray for lots and lots of peace....and though I know small, please pray that she doesn't lose her hair...there is a small chance she won't. She will get another scan in 3 months to assure that she is responsive to the chemo.
Thank you so incredibly much for your prayers, and caring for and loving us through this journey.

Waiting

So as most have heard we found out today that we will not be finding out my mom's PET scan results until next Monday. Apparently her oncologist is out all week..after kicking/screaming/sobbing getting over it tonight I have taken some time to meditate and be prayerful over the situation we are in. Over the last 2 years we have spent more time at doctor's offices and at hospitals than any family should ever need to and I have learned SO much about how as a provider I can be better at what I do. I approach every family and every patient with totally new intentions and insight. Families/parents/kids are scared, shocked and we as providers need to learn to meet them where they are and not question or belittle where they are at but embrace that everyone handles every situation differently. Even the most simple surgery is a BIG surgery when it is your family!! I've learned that the medical terminology that we assume people would/should know they don't. I have learned that most families have NO clue what in the world the doctor just said and they look to someone/anyone to decipher what in the world they are trying to say. So with this please friends in the medical profession be patient, speak to families and treat them as if they were your own...imagine how you would feel/act in a particular situation. And yes as one professional to another I plan to gently remind my mom's oncologist that it is NEVER EVER okay to keep a family waiting for possible life altering results for almost 2 weeks...we waited a week for the scan now anxiously wait for the results for a week. NEVER acceptable....no one should ever wait that long. I think sometimes unless a doctor has walked in the footsteps of their patients themselves or with family members they have no idea what it feels like...no idea what it feels like to be waiting...My sweet friend Ashley posted this song below and I have meditated on it for days now...I sob every time and my hubby asks me over and over if I should change the song but I have found SO much comfort in the song, comfort in the sobs and in the tears knowing that He is constant, He is only good and He is sovereign. And not for a moment will He forsake us. So thankful we can as his children rest in that promise...

I have also found so much comfort in this verse Marlen posted for me especially since patience is not easy for me:

Psalms 27:14-Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.

I cannot thank each of you, every friend, every person that has texted, called, sent encouragement and checked in over the last 1.5 weeks it already feels like an eternity but having SO many walking beside us has helped us get through it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart....we could not make it without your support and love.

UPDATE: Mom's appointment is set for Thursday, February 7th at 9:00 am. They are hoping to get us info before then but we aren't counting on it.
